Family portraits shouldn’t feel like a chore. As a Columbia, MO family photographer, I build sessions around how your family actually is – not a posed, everybody-smile version of you. My approach is relaxed, unhurried, and guided. Stephens Lake Park – open fields, waterside views, and beautiful afternoon light. One of Columbia’s most popular family portrait spots, and for good reason.

Rock Bridge Memorial State Park – wooded trails, natural light, and stunning Missouri landscape. Ideal for families who love the outdoors or want something with a timeless, natural feel.

Downtown Columbia – brick walls, murals, tree-lined streets, and real Columbia character. A great option for families who want something with personality rather than a generic park background.

MKT Trail and Grindstone Nature Area – relaxed and versatile. Open meadows, creek areas, and plenty of room for kids to run and be themselves.

Your home or property – some of my favorite family sessions have happened in living rooms, backyards, and front porches. If home is where your family actually lives, it’s often the best backdrop of all.

The best family portrait session is the one that actually happens – so any time works. That said, here’s what to expect across the seasons in Columbia, Missouri:

Spring (March–May) – Wildflowers, fresh green leaves, and mild temperatures. A beautiful season that books quickly once the weather turns. Great for young families with small children.

Summer (June–August) – Lush greenery and long evenings with gorgeous golden hour light. Sessions work best in the hour before sunset to avoid harsh midday sun. Sunflower fields are available late July through August.

Fall (September–November) – Missouri’s most popular season for family portraits. The fall foliage around Columbia and Rock Bridge State Park is stunning. Fall sessions fill up in August — book early if you want an October date.

Winter (December–February) – Studio sessions, holiday portraits, and minimalist outdoor options. A clean, striking look that many families love for Christmas cards and year-end memories.

Many of the families I photograph for portraits come back when their student reaches senior year – and I love that continuity. There’s something special about being trusted to document a family from early childhood through high school graduation and beyond.
