Battle High School is the newest of Columbia’s four public high schools — but Spartan seniors take their senior year just as seriously as anyone. If you’re a Battle student (or the parent of one) starting to plan senior portraits, this guide will help you navigate the process from start to finish.

When Should Battle Seniors Book Their Photos?

The best time to book is spring of junior year through early summer before senior year — typically April through July.

Here’s why that window works:

  • Columbia Public Schools yearbook deadlines usually fall in September or October. Getting your session done in summer gives you edited, finished images well before that window. Rushing in August means less flexibility if anything needs to be adjusted.
  • Summer is the peak booking season for photographers. The best evening time slots — especially golden hour on weekends — book up months in advance. Planning early means you have real choices.
  • Better preparation leads to better photos. When you’re not under time pressure, you can think carefully about outfits, choose locations that actually match your student’s personality, and come to the session relaxed and ready.

Already in senior year and haven’t booked yet? Don’t stress — reach out and we’ll find a workable plan.

Best Locations for Battle Senior Photos in Columbia, MO

Battle is located on the east side of Columbia, which puts it near a different set of location options than Hickman or Rock Bridge. Here are spots that work great for Battle Spartan sessions:

Stephens Lake Park One of the most versatile and accessible parks in Columbia. Open fields, lake views, and treeline backdrops give you variety within a single location. Works in nearly every season and light condition. A reliable first choice for students who want natural settings.

Rock Bridge Memorial State Park A bit of a drive but absolutely worth it for the right student. The natural rock bridge, wooded trails, and creek provide a unique Missouri landscape backdrop that you won’t find anywhere else. Ideal for students who love being outside.

Downtown Columbia Urban textures, murals, and architectural variety make downtown a strong choice for students with a more contemporary or artistic aesthetic. Works well for students who want something distinctive and not traditionally “portrait-like.”

Shelter Gardens Classic, polished, and consistently beautiful. If your student wants formal portraits in a manicured setting, Shelter Gardens is a go-to. Works especially well in spring and early summer.

University of Missouri Campus The iconic Mizzou columns and the surrounding campus architecture create a recognizable mid-Missouri backdrop. Great for students planning to attend MU or those with a family connection to the university.

Every student is different, and I’m happy to discuss which locations feel most authentic before the session. Many sessions combine two locations for variety.

What Should Battle Seniors Wear?

Here’s what actually works well — not just in theory but in the actual photos:

Plan for at least two outfits. One that’s more dressed up, one that feels like your everyday self. This gives your gallery natural range without having to overthink it.

Simple clothing photographs better. Big logos, busy graphics, and tight patterns pull attention away from the subject. Solid colors and simple textures keep the focus on your student’s face and expression, which is the whole point.

Wear what feels like you. Nothing shows up more clearly in a portrait than discomfort. Students who feel genuinely themselves in their clothes always photograph better than students who feel like they’re playing a role.

Include something meaningful. A jersey, an instrument, athletic gear — anything that represents what Battle has meant to your student. These props add context and meaning that elevates a portrait into something genuinely memorable.

Talk to me about color. If you have a specific color in mind, I can tell you which of your location choices it will work best with. Some bold colors are stunning in certain settings and distracting in others.

Including Sports and Activities

Battle Spartans are competitive in athletics, arts, and academics —  your senior portraits should have the option to reflect that. Whether your student plays football, soccer, runs track, performs in theater, competes academically, or is known for something entirely different, there’s room to incorporate that into the session.

Just let me know at booking what activities your student wants to include, and we’ll build that into the plan.
