Senior Photography FAQ — Everything You Need to Know

Planning senior portraits comes with a lot of questions especially if this is your first time going through the process. I’ve pulled together the most senior photography asked questions (FAQ) I hear from Columbia, MO seniors and their parents, and answered each one thoroughly. If you don’t see your question here, reach out directly and I’ll get back to you quickly.

The best time for most Columbia seniors is late spring of junior year through early to mid-summer before senior year — roughly May through July.

This window works for several reasons. First, Columbia Public Schools yearbook photo deadlines typically fall in September or October. Getting your session done in summer means your edited images are ready well before that deadline, with no last-minute rushing. Second, summer evenings offer the best natural light for outdoor sessions — warm, golden, and flattering in a way that midday light simply isn’t. Third, summer availability fills up fast. Booking in spring for a summer session gives you the best choice of dates and times.

If you’re already in senior year, you haven’t missed your chance, but the sooner you reach out, the more options you’ll have.

For summer sessions, I recommend booking 2 to 4 months in advance. June and July spots, especially weekend evenings, fill up quickly once senior season gets going.

If you want a fall session (some students prefer fall foliage or want to push things back), booking in summer for a September or October date gives you the best window.

The honest answer is: whenever you’re ready to start planning, that’s the right time to reach out. I’d rather have the conversation early and hold a date for you than have you scrambling later.

I recommend two to four outfits, depending on package. Two is a solid starting point; three – four is great if your session is more than an hour.

A useful framework: bring one outfit that feels more dressed up or formal (a dress, a blazer and slacks, something you’d wear to an event), and one outfit that feels genuinely like your everyday self. The contrast between the two creates natural variety in your gallery that makes the whole set of images feel richer.

A third/fourth outfit can be athletic gear, a uniform, or something tied to an activity or passion. Sports jerseys, marching band uniforms, drama costumes — these add a personal dimension that many families end up valuing most.

A few outfit tips that actually make a difference in photos:

  • stick to solid colors or simple patterns
  • avoid large logos and busy graphics
  • wear clothes that fit well (not too tight, not too baggy)
  • choose something that makes your student feel genuinely confident and comfortable.

Weather is one of the most common concerns I hear, and the answer is simple: I reschedule at no cost to you.

I don’t charge cancellation or rescheduling fees for weather. If the forecast is looking questionable, I’ll be in communication the day before and the morning of the session. We’ll find a new date that works for your schedule

If light rain is in the forecast but conditions are manageable, we may still proceed — some sessions in mild overcast light are actually beautiful. I’ll always discuss it with you first.

Yes, absolutely. Parents are welcome for the full session, and many do attend.

That said, every student is different. Some seniors relax and open up more when there’s a bit of distance from parents, and that ease shows up directly in photos. I gently encourage parents to step back a bit once the session gets going if the student seems more comfortable that way. I’ll read the room and follow the student’s lead.

There’s no right or wrong here. The goal is always for the senior to feel comfortable and confident, and I’ll do whatever supports that. Bringing a best friend also helps.

Absolutely! Pets are a great addition to a senior session, they’re natural conversation-starters, stress-reducers, and they almost always add personality to photos.

A few practical notes: make sure your pet is comfortable in public or outdoor spaces (we don’t want the session to become stressful for the animal). Bring a second person if possible to handle the pet when they’re not in the shot — it makes the logistics much smoother. You can let me know in advance so we can plan the location with pet access in mind.

Definitely. This is something I actively encourage.

Whether it’s a football helmet, a lacrosse stick, a volleyball, soccer ball, a swim cap, a track uniform, bring it. Sports portraits are some of the most meaningful images in a senior gallery because they capture what your student was doing at this stage of their life, not just how they looked.

Same goes for non-sports activities: an instrument, a paintbrush, a debate trophy. If it represents something meaningful about your student’s high school experience, it belongs in the session.

Yes — and this is one of the things I hear the most relief about from students who were nervous going in.

Most seniors have never been professionally photographed before, and not knowing what to do with your hands (or face, or body) is completely normal. Posing guidance is woven into every session. I direct clearly, keep things moving, and focus on making sure the student feels natural and confident rather than stiff or performative.

The goal is never to produce cookie-cutter portrait poses. It’s to find the angles, expressions, and body language that feel authentic to each individual student.

Most sessions run between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the package, the number of outfits, and the number of locations. I’ll give you a clear time estimate at booking.

If we’re shooting at two locations, budget a bit of travel time between them, usually 10 to 20 minutes depending on the spots.

Edited galleries are typically delivered within 2 weeks of the session. I’ll communicate a clear timeline at booking.

If you have a specific deadline like a yearbook submission, a special event, or a deadline for ordering prints — let me know at booking and I’ll make sure we plan accordingly.

Yes, please. Send me a message and I’ll get back to you quickly. No question is too small — I’d rather answer it upfront than have you go into the session with uncertainty.

What makes SheyiKreations different from other senior photographers in Columbia?

A few things I hear consistently from clients:

I meet students where they are. Not every senior walks in confident and ready for the camera. I create a low-pressure environment where students can relax, be themselves, and gradually get comfortable — and the photos reflect that.

Sessions are personal, not templated. I don’t have a “senior pose package” I run everyone through. We talk about who your student is, what matters to them, and what they actually want from the session — and we build from there.

I communicate well. From booking to delivery, I keep you informed. No wondering what’s happening or when your gallery will arrive.
